*Please note that medical insurance does not always cover the cost of testing. Therefore, payment for these services will be your responsibility. The front office and our providers will gladly discuss this with you and help you understand what is covered and what is not covered. However, please note the responsibility relies on you to know your own insurance benefits and share of cost.

Neuropsychological Evaluations:

Evaluations are offered for adults and older adults. The process typically begins with a 45-60 minute intake session where our provider gets to know your background and your specific concerns. The evaluation is then scheduled typically within two weeks of your initial session, if not the same day. You can expect the entire process to take approximately 3-8 hours depending on the amount of testing to be completed as well as your own personal endurance. Results are discussed in a feedback session, if requested, typically within two weeks after the completion of testing, depending on a variety of factors including insurance issues (this can make the wait for results much longer). Our providers are sensitive to your needs and will discuss all of this with you at the time of your initial appointment.

Pre-Surgical Evaluations:

Pre-surgical psychological evaluations are done to assess psychological factors that may affect a patient’s surgical outcome in both positive and negative ways. The goal of a pre-surgical psychological evaluation is to provide recommendations to both the surgical team and the patient on how psychosocial factors may affect the patient’s surgical outcomes. Treatment interventions and recommendations can be identified with things such as postsurgical follow-ups or whether surgery is truly the best option for the patient.

Our psychologists will meet with you to help identify possible risk factors and risk-mitigating factors. This is done through a clinical interview that is typically 45-60 minutes followed by psychological test measurements that can take a patient 2-3 hours to complete depending on ability. These evaluations are an important way to assess a patient’s current psychological symptoms, risk factors, mitigating factors (i.e., coping strategies) in order to provide recommendations to the surgeon and patient for good treatment outcomes.

Immigration Evaluations:

The objective of an immigration evaluation is to document the immigrant's mental well-being and evaluate the possible psychological repercussions of deportation or family separation. These assessments can spotlight trauma, mental health conditions, or the psychological aftermath of persecution and abuse experienced by the individual in their country of origin.

Immigration evaluations are an in-depth clinical evaluation that consist of two sessions that are approximately one and one-half hours long each. The first session is often a one-on-one session where initial information is gathered. In the second session, you may be asked to bring your spouse or children for brief interview. The write-up time for these evaluations is typically between three to four weeks.

Types of Immigration Evaluations

  • Asylum Cases: Explaining psychological reasons why a client missed the one-year deadline and detailing how PTSD symptoms provide evidence of the persecution they suffered.
  • Extreme Hardship Cases: Identifying unique factors contributing to a client’s psychological distress such as illness, disability, professional, financial, or academic hardship, or adverse home-country conditions that would affect the petitioner or their family members.
  • VAWA Cases: Detailing the client’s psychological symptoms which are common for domestic violence victims, assessing credibility and, where useful, explaining less common phenomena such as ways in which men are abused by female partners.

VA Disability Benefits Evaluation (DBQ):

The purpose of a mental health examination for VA disability compensation is to gather information about your mental health to aid in that decision. The evaluation will focus on issues related to your mental health symptoms and how they impact your life. This evaluation is separate from any mental health treatment you may be receiving.

These evaluations involve an interview where you will be asked questions about all aspect os your life and your service-connected disabilities and how they affect your mental health symptoms. The evaluation typically takes about an hour to complete.

In addition to the interview, the psychologist will also need to review your applicable medical service records that you supply.

Please note that the VA may send you for an evaluation at their facility and you may not need an independent evaluation from our office to assist in the decision of your claim.  Please speak to your VA examiner if you have any questions.
